Professor of Music at Cornell University, William Austin feels that the six composers, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartok, Webern, Hindemith and Prokofiev, together with Debussy, ""form a framework in which contemporary styles can be approximately located."" He surveys the music of the twentieth century from Debussy, following the variations the growing freedom of tonality has taken. Important and representative works are analyzed; biographical information is given where pertinent to the music. Professor Austin considers lesser contemporaries; places the collective achievements of jazz prominently.
