To many John Paul Jones symbolizes United States naval history during the war for independence, but Nicholas Biddle was another who did much for the embryonic navy of revolutionary times. Killed in action at the age of 27 while in command of the frigate Randolph, Biddle had already established his reputation as a skilled naval officer. Raised in Philadelphia, he shipped out on a trader to the West Indies, was shipwrecked, became a midshipman in the Royal Navy and gained a sound education in naval tactics and fundamentals- returned to take part in the war for independence, and quickly rose through two commands, both executed well. An unfamiliar figure, Biddle is established here as a worthy partner of John Paul Jones. The market however will be chiefly among students of naval history.
