In a vocabulary that reduces the complicated technicality to the clearly understandable, the author of Skywatchers: The U.S. Weather Bureau in Action discusses waves, ""nature's method of sending energy from place to place"". Water, sound, light, geologic and electronic energy produce distinctive wave patterns, and after discussing these patterns, the instruments that measure them are introduced and explained. Along the way, the history of the discoveries in physics, as well as the inventions based on the discoveries, is worked into the text, humanizing and highlighting an area that can seem very barren for beginners. Simple experiments involving easily obtained materials are also suggested.
