A fine historical survey comments companionably on evolution, related species, integration into human society and the many different jobs horses have done. Must information for junior equestrians, this covers basic facts about eohippus and the tapir, the dog-sized shetland and the mustang. And in a panorama of social roles there is the horse as knight's steed, as plow puller, and even as glue producer. Many two-tone pictures on each page by Paula Hutchison accompany the text- by the author of A World Full of Homes and in daily life, assistant to the Director at the American Museum of Natural History.
