NIGHT BEAT

This spends a few days--or rather long nights--in some nameless town with a cadet just out of the police academy riding in the seat of a patrol car...taking a coronary to a hospital...searching for a seven year old Negro child who has vanished...breaking up a gang fight...and finally witnessing the shooting of another policeman..... A tight-lipped documentary of precinct procedures which often finds the man on the beat on the short end of the big stick.... but as a book it's not much more than background music for Car 54--Route 66.
