CUT-RATE QUARTERBACK

The fictional Chicago Miners--Wild Willie, Wide Receiver (1974); Quarterback Gamble (1970)--tackle the rest of the NFL once again as sardonic jock and star quarterback Joe Rogers narrates his climb from ""Barbison High"" to the Super-bowl. Joe's divorced but still friendly parents and girlfriend Liz, Gault's unconvincing gesture to women's lib, provide diversionary action. Gault does a better job with Rogers' black teammates, but his aim is the game. There's lots of play-by-play, reported in fast-paced dialogue that occasionally out-cutes itself. Grid your teeth.
