THE BRIGHT, BRIGHT WATER

A story of a group of Americans on the Caribbean island of St. Lo during the summer of 1945 which clears away the bougainvillea to ride a few political arguments, air a few attitudes, and indulge in some conversation which if sophisticated, is also derivative. Among them are Robert Mayo, a man of good will and idealistic intentions, but unable to persuade Trent Snowden to marry him; Trent, who is tied to the dependence of Henry Stephenson, ruined by his mother and liquor; Ben Fiorentino, white boss of the black men, unprincipled and prepared to sell guns to the Communists; Rhea, who has an affair with Ben while her husband is away; a newspaperman; a homosexual; etc. Political trouble, some of it, comes to a head; Ben is murdered- unidentifiably so- by David; and Trent walks out on her marriage to Robert to stick with Henry- while Robert heads back to the States... A bull session with some larger issues and private conflicts- which still doesn't offer much more than emancipated entertainment on a rental level.
