HORSES ARE FOR WARRIORS

A story of the Nez Perce Indians' first acquisition of their famous Apaloosa ponies is sluggish but not without its value as solid historical background. In 1714 Lame Wolf, the chief's son who plans to get the ""spotted dogs"" for his own tribe, departs on a pretended mission and acquaints himself with a stray band of horses from the enemy Shoshone camp. Two months Later he returns riding one of them, teaches his fellows what he has taught himself in the wilderness, and is able, in a future raid on the Shoshones, to win back the captive Antelope for his bride. Glenn Balch's Indian Saddle Up is a similar, more lively story of the Comanches, but this is possible companion reading.
