Some people skip through the index-less New Yorker just looking for the Liebling signature on an article. One of his essays on the ""wayward press"", food, or sport make a trip through all those crowded ads worthwhile. He's always good and these selections are unquestionably his best. His reporting of the antics of ""Uncle Earl"" Long, his ruminations on the late Colonel McCormick of the Chicago Trib are outstanding examples of his superb eye for the eccentric on the American horizon.
