Granted that the credibility gap is a gulch, Newman, the central character here takes it in his stride (as will you) when he hears that there's some 400,000 now tripled to be retrieved from a Swiss bank where it was hidden during the war by his father and three others. Actually it's a fiction to get at a girl, a spy, whom he helped to escape earlier and for whom he served a sentence. A two-ply story of dirty money and treason activated with great speed and facility and -- be it acknowledged -- novelty in a genre where we only expect facsimiles of what we've read before. Good.
