MARSHALL: CITIZEN SOLDIER

Last Fall saw the publication of Together by Katherine T. Marshall (unfortunately, it was printed by a firm that has not heretofore done trade books, so many people missed it). That was a very personal human document, while this new one is more objective. Frye takes up Marshall's distinguished heritage, his boyhood, his years at V.M.I., his first marriage, and then treats in greater detail his Army career,- the Philippines, China, France as a greatly admired Staff Officer in World War I, his military philosophy, a brief- of so politic, discussion of his not too friendly relations with MacArthur, his job as Chief of Staff, and a hasty last chapter bringing things up to date with his mission in China and his appointment as Secretary of State. Inclined to be precious on personal details of Marshall's life, boyhood anecdotes and his superhuman genius for military administration, the book shines brightest in its frank discussion of Army philosophy, tactics, personalities. THE biography is still to come- this one is too spotty for full enjoyment- too unbalanced in its Pollyanna-ish portrait of a man without fault.
