THE PRERAPHAELITE TRAGEDY

Though this was a best seller in wartime London, it seems to us pretty remote for the American market. On the face of it, the subject would seem to consign it to the literate; the treatment, however, makes it easy to define as good escape reading, amusing, entertaining, full of a lively wit and stimulating to read. It is the story of the personalities who comprised the pre-Raphaelite group in the last half of 19th century England. He takes the personalities of successive phases in order, starting with Human Hunt, John Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, follows them through their checkered careers, relating each to phases of the movement, and bringing the story down to its close. Not as easy reading as Poor, Splendid Wings.
