This picks up where Pearl Harbor to Coral Sea left off. Once again it is virtually a blow by blow report, with a quality of eye witness on the spot reporting. Occasionally the editors include personal stories -- now short, now long, which add a flavor of human interest to the meticulous official record. From Coral Sea to Midway; the way back from defeat to victory by way of the Solomons, Savo, Makin (with the exploits of Carlson's raiders) Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, Kula Gulf, Bougainville; and a final section devoted to the Aleutians campaign. Important as record- but not as lively reading as the second volume Atlantic War.
