THE ROSS FORGERY

Typographer Edgar Ross is offered a hundred thousand dollars to create a perfect forgery of a forgery -- namely one that will pass for the handiwork of someone called Thomas Wise who in his day assembled 50 false first editions. The new one will enable a rough character called O'Kane to retaliate against a Texas millionaire. In spite of the meticulous choice of properly aged paper, type-face and kerns, and of a writer, R.L. Stevenson, all of this miscarries disastrously but it's well ahead of his first book -- amusing and carried off in bold face.
