WATCH THE PUPPY GROW

Last year there was a tremendously successful book called Watch the Pony Grow. Successful in that it proved to have apparently irresistible merchandise appeal. Undoubtedly this new volume will duplicate that success. Having made a bow to its sales value, I must once again confess to being impervious to its ""charm"". It seems to me an inadequate book with an artificial format -- which incidentally falls apart in about two handlings of a three year old. The illustrations, tracing the progress on pages of successive as a puppy grows bigger and bigger, are not especially imaginative, but the white space surrounding them sets them off. The puppy wears a collar, he walks on leash, he sleeps, eats, goes out to play, and eventually arrives at the status of a full grown shaggy dog, shown on the cover. Ruth Carroll has done more effective work than this.
