This book succeeds in bringing alive a man and the roaring, bustling era in which he lived. It is the story of each phase of Greeley's life -- unhappy childhood, printer's devil, young New York publisher, moralist, Whig and one of the founders of the Republican Party, supporter of Lincoln and the abolitionist movement, presidential candidate running against Grant, and finally the old ""Sage of Chappaqua"", is beautifully handled. Many greats of the day appear in the narrative -- Barnum, Margaret Fuller, Lincoln, Clay, Thurlow Weed, the Beecher family and the elder Bennett. Fine supplementary reading for American history and literature.
