FAMOUS COACHES

By

Pub Date: May 20th, 1968

Glancing at reputations rather than technique or specific games, this skims the careers of fifteen coaches; four each in baseball and football, three in basketball, one each for track (Cromwell), hockey (Patrick), crew (Callow), and swimming (Kiphuth). The emphasis is on personality (Connie Mack as ""the nicest man in baseball,"" Pop Warner sewing deceptive footballs on jerseys) but there's not much besides nostalgia and the expectable nods at statistics (""the winningest""--at least four times). Clean living is the most frequent strategy, livened only by some Stengelese.
