Regional period adventure, this tale of an intrepid river pilot who took the loss of his first Missouri packet bitterly to heart, but managed to pull himself out of despair and launch on a new river venture which challenged his experience and ability. That he found himself trapped in a vicious scheme to arm the Indians of the upper Missouri against the whites was spur to his ingenuity and prowess, and he managed to save the situation at the eleventh hour. That he won the right woman for a frontiersman- and inherited the boat he had saved from shame made a fitting climax. Based on sound historical record of action- we are told- but the narrative and characterization seem two dimensional. No strain on the gray matter; unimportant.
