ROCKY MALONE

It's been a poor season for the sports stories league. This is a fair candidate. If it doesn't pile up touchdowns, at least it scores in hardy fashion. A scholarship from Warwick Mansfield, a settlement house benefactor and football devotee, transplanted Rocky Malone from West Side poolrooms to the Cornwall campus for a football scholarship. On-the-defensive Rocky bridled at teammate Lance Corbett -- a supercilious ivy league type. Suddenly Warwick Mansfield died -- as -- coincidentally- a sports writer observed a hood offering Rocky a deal. Seraps and skirmishes on the gridiron happened before Rocky and Lance forget the differences between haves-and have-nots in team spirit. No girls in this story -- so it's strictly male.
