An unpalatable, disjointed and difficult tale, leaving a bad taste in the mouth and a scrambled sense in the brain, a sense of undigested ideas, unpleasant people, and confusion of motives. The story revolves primarily around two brothers, both trained in the vineyards and with leanings toward art, both in love with daughters of a rich wine merchant. But they both go off, adventuring emotionally throughout southern France, and through a tale of lust and love there is interwoven dirty politics, racial complication, left versus right, etc. Ultimately one brother sells his birthright for a mess of potage, marriage to the winegrower's daughter whom he loves, and is led in her traces. The other brother is eventually guillotined for a double murder he did not commit. Your conservatives will be very gunshy, and all in all it's too sordid for the average reader.
