A Guide for Catholic Students in Secular Colleges and Universities -- the subtitle -- is more representative of the scope and information presented in Catholics on Campus than is indicated in the title. Dr. William J. Whalen, a professor of English at Purdue University and editor of the University Press, has served as faculty adviser to the Newman Glub there for the past decade. Drawing on this varied experience Dr. Whalen a book which should be required reading for Catholic students in secular schools, Catholics who will enroll in them, and most certainly for their parents. Dr. Whalen points out that at present more than 450,000 Catholic students are in secular institutions of higher learning, and predicts that this number will multiply until the majority of all college-trained Catholics will be products of secular -- rather than Catholic -- education. Presenting a sane and balanced appraisal of the opportunities and dangers resulting from a secular education, Dr. Whalen offers excellent counter suggestions as to how a student can mature in his faith in a non-Catholic college at the same pace as he grows intellectually, socially and emotionally. Active affiliation with one of the 750 Newman Clubs flourishing on non-Catholic campuses is cited as one fine means to give a student an opportunity to build a spiritual program around a complete schedule of religious, educational, cultural and social activities. He includes a complete list of these clubs. Helpful chapters on study habits, activities, special moral problems and a Catholic student's responsibility to society after graduation round out a readable, thoroughly worth-while book.
