MINORITIES IN AMERICAN HISTORY: Years of Strife, 1929-1956

Years of Strife is primarily social history and though, like the first four volumes in this series, it will not replace the many titles available on specific minority groups, it does offer an unusual panoramic perspective. Katz steers away from the more ubiquitous examples of discrimination and protest, to remind us how pervasive institutionalized racism was during this period -- in law, in accommodations (even a Washington, D.C. dog cemetery was segregated on the basis of the owner's race) and especially in textbooks.
