The author, as trade commissioner, has had access to statistics not available to the public, which strengthens the value of his chapters on economics. He has covered the material topically, instead of under each Republic. Occasionally verges on the academic, but on the whole an excellent general survey for those who want to dig a little deeper than possible in most of the current books.
