TREES OF THE EASTERN U. S. AND CANADA

Reported in September (P. 462) as a handy pocket field guide, with 300 photographs illustrating leaves, flowers, fruit, twigs, bark of trees. Accompanying tech tells what to look for by way of classification, and makes a game of keys to tree groups. Final judgment witheld for the finished book, which is now here, and -- for me at least -- is the answer to prayer. I've wanted just exactly such a practical, workable field guide. The illustrations are excellent, and every clue is there. Too bad if one doesn't supply the answer. Text is skilfully handled -- index is good --divisions and subdivisions are clear cut -- format is compact and attractive. It's tops in its field.
