The time is 1884 for this story of the hard long search for gold against the elements, against Indians, nefarious gamblers, shifty leeches, and physical hardships, as Seth Munroe, a sober, serious hero, sets out from muddy Missouri to track down gold. The book does a thorough job of research on several levels,-Indian problems, mining, the coming through of the railroads, etc. There's a mine of interesting local information here for supplementary reading on American expansion. But there's a good chase story too, with a solid ending not draped in gold nuggets!
