One of the best of the excellent Seaport Series -- well timed for California's centenary. Formidable in size- but consistently good reading -- and extraordinarily fresh in approach, in concentration on the seaport aspects (various ports, the bay, and ships, the waterfront) and in the vigor of its style. He has given us a rich of story, legend, biography, adventure, social and economic analysis. The labor his? of San Francisco's waterfront is objectively and fairly handled, which makes this important in the overall history of the labor movement in America. A skeleton background history holds the whole together, without becoming obtrusive. Good item for the long haul.
