FAREWELL TO TEXAS: A Vanishing Wilderness

Not a man to let a wilderness vanish unheeded, Justice Douglas writes what one hopes will not be a footnote to the natural sights and splendors of Texas. The Big Bend is protected by a national park, but the Big Thicket to the southeast is going down at the rate of fifty acres a day to ""progress."" One can still raft down the Rio Grande and explore the sites of the River People, or view the Davis Mountains, fairly unspoiled grazing country, in the Chihuahua Desert North of the Chisos. But how to preserve Capote Falls, the miracle in the desert, while opening it to nature-lovers, or the golden eagle, monarch of the mountains? Justice Douglas wonders as he wanders; one hopes legislators will listen.
