Shamed out of town by rumors that his father is selling rifles to warring Indians, Lafe Birdwell hires himself out to a professional buffalo hunter to escape from the people who knew him. Even when he lives among Strangers, his fear is only relieved by his tentative friendship with 27 year old Rice McKay. The ending is reasonably realistic; that is, Lafe's father does not turn up innocent-- he doesn't turn up at all--and Lafe learns to live with the uncertainty of his past. The writing features good characters and nice way with backwoods dialogue. The plot drags a little, but like most of this author's Works, it is one of the better frontier stories.
