There are tough guy cops in Scotland, too, and Edinburgh's DCI David Fyfe is one of them. He's been pushed into the low-profile Fraud Squad after some years-ago mistakes but has now been asked by Chief Constable Sir Duncan Morrison to undertake the delicate investigation of licentious Father Donald Byrne, Father Quinn (Byrne's superior), and the several hundred thousand dollars missing from the church's accounts. Meanwhile, a series of murders in the city, seemingly related to drug dealing, and the release of Jad Adamson from jail have put racketeering kingpin Gus Barrie in the spotlight again. Eight years ago, Gus's crazed brother, Mike, and Adamson robbed a bank of millions in used notes. When he was about to be captured, Mike killed himself and set fire to the money, but rumor persists that the latter still exists—possibly in the hands of Mike's gorgeous widow, Angela, now living with husband number four on the Costa del Sol. Adamson's release on parole into the custody of Father Byrne; Angela's return to Scotland, at Gus's urging; and Fyfe's sex life, with its echoes of the turbulent past, all conspire to bring about a burgeoning death count as well as an unforeseen bonanza. High-voltage goings-on, packed with steamy sex, mixed motives, and sometimes confusing action, but Fyfe's first procedural will grab the reader's attention and hold it to the finish.
