THE GREAT GEPPY

I'm putting this under the ""read aloud"" heading because (a) it has too much story for a picture story book classification, and yet the pictures are enchanting and a vital part of the whole; (b) the vocabulary and the complexity of the story is too much for the child under ten to read to himself, unless he is fairly mature in his mechanics of reading and his vocabulary. And yet the story, read aloud to a seven and eight and nine year old, is sure fire. Fantastic story of a red and white striped horse, a detective in his own right, sent to a circus on a problem of regular robbing of the safe. He has to pinch hit on all sides, as tight rope walker, as lion tamer, etc. and is pretty much of a flop until he takes the place of the human projectile, when he discovers himself endowed with the power of flight. A nonsense tale with a bit too complicated a story and not enough laughs for the young one to get alone, but should go, read aloud by a sympathetic adult.
