BEHOLD MY GLORY: Great Stories from the Bible & the Masterpieces They Have Inspired

Dr. Purcell, a well known British clergyman of the Church of England, has retold in reverent words, the great stories of the Bible, Old and New -32 of them- which have inspired world masterpieces. The paintings are reproduced in full color- and at the back of the text, there are brief commentaries on the paintings, the artists, and where they are exhibited. Inevitably, there will be comparison between this volume and Marvin Ross' THE LIFE OF CHRIST, in which the words of the New Testament are used to accompany the reproductions of the masterpieces. If it is fair to judge from the promotion piece distributed by Harper- and the finished book received from Hawthorn, it would seem that the quality of reproduction will be better in the Harper book. But it is fair to point out that sometimes the finished book does not live up to the promise of the sample! The choice will, however, depend largely on whether the preference is for a retelling of the Bible stories or the use of the King James (or the Douay Bible) text. The Purcell text, and the reputation of the research responsible for The Heirloom Bible illustrations as well as these insures a high standard of competence for Behold My Glory.
