In Little Children there was promise of a more formulated, pungent type of short story. Here, in the old vein of obscurantism, verging on the meaningless, are sketches, monologues, essays not in essay form. The first section is a rambling half-fantasy, the second is along the same lines, the third, satirical bits on Hollywood-screwballiana, the fourth contains one striking piece on some gutter kids, more in the Little Children vein, and lastly there is a group of dissertations on modern ills -- fascism -- poverty -- unemployment, etc., etc. It's disappointing.
