KIRKUS REVIEW

Discovered and deemed pertinent by Bernard M. Baruch, who contributes the foreword, these Lectures on Modern History and the French and American Revolutions were delivered to Cambridge students in the period of Smyth's tenure as professor and were originally published in 1840. They are edited for the more modern reader by the excision of the routine chronicle of events and regard for more recent historical contributions. Mr. Baruch points out that Smyth's reflections on the character and conduct of men teach that reason and realism, not elevated sentiments, form the basis for guiding human affairs.
