THE DANUBE FLOWS THROUGH FASCISM

A misleading title, as it is actually a travel book rather than a book on fascism. The Van Tels, loathing routine travel, chose a collapsible canoe and proceeded down the Danube, through Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Jugoslavia, stopping at larger cities, sleeping in taverns, talking with all along their way. Thirty-seven days at a cost of about $4.00 a day for the two. Commentary on political reactions, undercurrent of resentment of Fascism, acceptance of it in Austria, democracy of smaller countries, Catholic Fascism, etc. Anecdotes of places and people. Style colloquial, occasionally striving for humor, but pleasant enough entertainment.
