THE WORLD I LEFT BEHIND ME

Banal shenanigans involving a team of scientists and engineers about to crack the secret of faster-than-light travel. Their attempts to take off for Alpha Centauri keep being interrupted by visits from an unpleasant alien (""Stinky"") who doesn't want them ruining that or any other interstellar neighborhood. To drive the point home, the liver-colored monster successively creates an epidemic of psychosis, lobs a rock from space at project headquarters on the asteroid Ceres, and unleashes a flood of damaging publicity back on Terra. There is a wan attempt at love interest, and one of those lovable international casts of characters that seem to have been cadged from UNESCO Christmas cards. Awful.
