RELIGION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AMERICAN CULTURE

A recognized authority on American Church History, Professor Sweet has given us an interesting study of the place of religion in the early history of the United States. Beginning with the Revolution and continuing through the first half century of our independence, the author traces the part played by the churches in early American life. He deals with all manifestations of religion during that period- the various Protestant denominations, the Catholic Church, the Jewish synagogue and with such developments as the Latter Day Saints (Mormonism). The book reveals how great a factor religion was in the winning of our independence, in determining our mores and in shaping our institutions. Students of American history, and especially church historians will find this book illuminating. A well documented book, it is nevertheless very readable.
