Not strictly a novel, this is a reportorial narrative of a voyage out of California to New Zealand with an assorted cargo of shipmates. The assembling of the crew, first days out, yarning, whipping the dog, enmities and friendships, bad food, sprees in port, dangers, storms, etc. make up the substance of the book which is an account of seafaring life on board and ashore. Familiar material, but with a youthful enthusiasm in the highlighting of incidents -- and no hesitation in spadecalling the grimmer side of life below decks. Limited sale.
