TARGET

Major Hal Brett, 31, a former French and German teacher, is sent into enemy territory during WWII to locate the jet factory assembling German planes. He is a four eyed paper soldier who has only fired his .45 three times -- badly. Assigned to help him is WAAF Flight Lt. Elsie Vane, a fair expert on the Alsace region. When Brett and Elsie arrive in Strasbourg, the Germans have retreated just across the Rhine and the recapture of the city seems imminent. The two become deeply involved in French politics and counter espionage and find some French more eager to rewelcome the Germans rather than the Allies. In return for granting safe passage to a French industrialist, Brett locates the jet factory and, soon, the Flying Fortresses wing toward the target. It's a story that might have been serialized in Collier's 10 or 15 years ago.
