THE STOP

Three red sandstone buttes comprise the single desert scene repeated here on every page, effectively unchanged except in color to indicate the different times of day and night and the changing weather as a boy waits with an injured pony while his older brother goes for help. Wondriska's illustrations project a sense of the monumental indifference of the desert which makes the lonely wait more keenly impressive than if the boy himself were the subject.
