A book of stories of the common people of China and the part war plays in their lives, told by a woman who lived there fifteen years and who has been working with the Chinese Red Cross, and interspersed with personal experiences and observations about China and Chinese character. It is full of human interest anecdotes, of peasants semi-literate and educated people, of courage and cowardice, of kindness and cruelty, of the wake of the war, of missionaries, doctors, of Communism and the Japanese. There are descriptions of bombings, fighting and destruction and the book is a first hand account of terror in the land but not in the heart, a non-political picture that to inspired by the author's belief in and love for the people and the country.
