OBEDIENCE CLASS INSTRUCTION FOR DOGS

Mrs. Strickland's Expert Obedience Training for Dogs (1965; rev. 1969) taking in the home, is probably the best around; in this second book she concentrates on the instructor-cum-handler approach to formal training in the ring. And again, the dog is an enjoyable partner in the Obedience training ded rather than an infirm machine. In coaching the instructor as well as handler, Mrs. Strickland is decifirm about eliminating waste motion -- unnecessary signalling and shouting, and repeated commands. She urges puppy training, the kind of concentrated attention and empathy that helps you ""think ahead of the dog,"" and tells the instructor/trainer what to do with the hands when not signalling and leashing (fold them in front of you). She reviews in detail the exercises for all regular and non-regular classes, advises on holding club practice-and-AKC matches, and explains judging criteria. AKC Obedience regulations are included and there will be photographs. Mrs. Strickland's latest wins its UDT easily.
