Karen, Crystal, Alma and Becky, bound to each other as four dateless girls, decide to overcome their plight at the beginning of senior year. The author's approach is obvious; the girls eat like ravenous bears and huddle together whenever possible. On the first day of school they begin the ""big change,"" and although they must go to the first dance en masse, they begin socializing and dating with unrealistic rapidity. Three out of the four get their men; the fourth, who had been taken into a fast group, is killed in a car accident owing to drinking. Each date, telephone call and reaction is predictable, pages before it occurs, as are the set solutions which come in a great bunch at the end.
