FORTUNE IS A WOMAN

A modern drama has the clean story line of his earlier Night Without Stars and manages some superior suspense as well as an attractive romance. Oliver Branwell, an insurance investigator, touchy about his background which the war had helped to equalize, meets again after some years Sarah Moreton, now the wife of aristocratic, asthmatic Tracey when he settles a fire damage claim which involved two pictures. His friendship with Tracey, his more than casual interest in Sarah, does not soothe his suspicions of them both when he finds one of the two pictures in another man's house, and the possibility of a larger fraud is realized with the arson at Lewis Manor in which Tracey is killed. His accusation of Sarah substantiates her innocence- rather than involvement, and they marry and face a triple threat. For the return of Tracey's signet ring suggests that he is still alive, and while Sarah is blackmailed, Oliver finds himself blacklisted in the insurance field where he is suspected of complicity in the fraud. But his impulsive investigation, which leads to many misdemeanours on his part- finally clears his name and his future with Sarah..... An exciting entertainment which should make a double entry in the mystery field and place well in both.
