Not the first but certainly the most authoritative, up-to-date of its kind, the ideal engagement or shower gift for the prospective bride. Actually any homemaker, of any age, would find it useful, for there is practical information on a wide range of subjects. The arrangement is alphabetical for quick reference, with cross headings to indicate entries in other sections. The approach--except that brand names are not used-- is somewhat that of consumers' research. The areas of coverage suggest the scope: appliances, emergencies, automobiles, clothes, entertaining, food (how to use recipes--definitely not a cookbook), furniture, health, shopping, etc.etc. There are numerous charts, such as types of cheeses and their uses; wines; spices and herbs. There is a good deal of general information about diets for children, for losing weight, for gaining weight. The data on clothing, for example, is very practical. Housecleaning, removal of stains, estate planning, indicate the range of interest. It is rather surprising to find budgeting only by implication, and no entry for either radios or television sets. But all in all, this is excellent and highly recommended.
