THE MIND AND FAITH OF A. POWELL DAVIES

The last fourteen years of Dr. A. Powell Davis were spent as a minister of All Souls' Unitarian Church in Washington, D.C. Here Justice Wm. O. Douglas of the U.S. Supreme Court, became his good friend and admirer. He now presents us with an interesting and well chosen selection from Dr. Davies' books, sermons and addresses which do indeed reveal his mind and faith and show him forth as an ardent champion of liberal religion and politics, and the fearless fighter for human justice and true democracy at a time when men were being pilloried and villified for daring to speak the truth as they saw it. Justice Douglas has also included in this book a valuable section which shows Dr. Davies' understanding and sympathy as a counselor, a man with a genuine grasp of what is in man which led many to turn to him in their distress. In a time of growing conformity and a dwindling in the adventuresomeness of the human spirit, this book has value far beyond its intrinsic worth. Justice Douglas has included a warm and graceful biography as his personal tribute. Ministers of liberal persuasion will read and take heart from this book, and recommend it to their most thoughtful laity.
