Among those with more time than money, the best birthday, anniversary or Christmas greetings may be edible. The editors plump up a very mixed group of recipes with exhortations to let creativity be your guide and ""express your own personality."" For the Indian food addict, try homemade chutney; for the chocolate fanatic, make several kinds of chocolate cookies; for the health food nut, an herbed bread. The advice is to package and wrap with care--an earthenware crock, a straw basket, flower pots, a child's toy dump truck all make stylish containers. The recipes themselves are for every degree of cooking skill from well-meaning inept to gourmet. The fruit breads come off best along with some fancy pickles and relishes. Leave the rice mixes and barbecue sauces alone. And just to make sure--taste it yourself first.
