A MARITIME HISTORY OF NEW YORK by WPA

A MARITIME HISTORY OF NEW YORK

By

Publisher: Doubleday, Doran

A mosaic of the ramifications and variations that compose this seaport behind which has grown one of the greatest cities of the world. The chapters dealing with the history up to the development of steam are the most satisfactory, because they embrace all aspects of the growth of New York. With the coming of steam and the new means of marine and rail transportation, so large a portion of the country's imports and exports funnelled through New York harbor that the canvas becomes too large for the frame, and the story of the last 100 years is confined to maritime history strictly, and that with too much statistical data for easy reading. The book abounds in interesting facts, though not in competition with authoritative reference tomes.
