KIRKUS REVIEW

Maybe because his philosophy and time symbolism slip sideways and are difficult to catch in fictional terms, maybe because his different drummer has kept to one beat and one fanciful corner through the years -- but Wright Morris has not been automatically placed on the All Star team of American writers. This is a phenomenon Granville Hicks, in his introduction, deplores. In any case this is a prime collection -- two out-of-print novels (The Field of Vision and The Works of Love) plus selections from other, novels, short stories, and essays. An intelligent retrospective of an unique and tantalizing talent.
