KIRKUS REVIEW

In 1900 sixteen-year-old Matt Prescott knew what he planned to do with his life--cross the runty Florida cattle with Brahma stock and build himself a king-size ranch of cattle hardy enough to withstand the Florida heat, wet and ticks, yet meaty enough to fetch the prices of Texas cows. En route to gaining his empire Matt fights his neighbors who resent his fencing open lands and his modern ranching methods; his Cuban wife who resents his many love affairs, and his son who wants a life of his own. 1945 finds Matt undisputed head of Florida's cattle industry and reconciled with his wife and to the death of his son in the war. Cardboard characters move in a rough and ready plot that amounts to a western with a difference--the setting and the time.
