A physician who had practised in Boston, Wyman Richardson pursued other arts at the Farm House on Nauset Marsh in Enstham, Cape Cod. A nature lover, he followed the ways of the marsh creatures, on air, land and water, and he wrote about them with sureness and affection -- his articles appeared in The Atlantic Monthly. Here we have an opportunity to share Farm House life -- to ruminate on the wind and weather, the flight and language of birds, the question of their intelligence and the author's suggestions that they have a time and direction sense. We go blue crabbing, watch the gyrfalcon visit the marsh, spend a day fishing for Roccus Linealus, king of the fish. We enjoy a ""do-nothing day"" with the family- one reads with the question of what one does on such a day, and the answers are very full and satisfying. A book which appeals through the nature of the subject and the author -- for the lover of nature and outdoor life, quietly captivating.
